Classic Film Femme

An Extraordinary Woman

Oh dear. Here is a difficult spot to be in. I’m just finishing reading Anna Karenina by Tolstoy (as you see I wasn’t joking about the Russian obsession) and I cannot for the life of me choose which of the two major classic film versions of this novel to watch first. It makes a difference you know. One always compares the first to the second and I want to see the best version right after reading the book. I mean, it’s not as if we’re comparing light weight actresses here. We’re talking about Greta Garbo and Vivien Leigh in the ring! This may be even more difficult than Anna’s choice between Vronsky and Alexei! Who would your money be on? Can you help me to choose?

  1. I would watch both! But I think I’d chose the Vivien Leigh one first since we all know how much you love Greta Garbo. Greta’s gonna win your heart, me thinks.

    • Garbo it is! Though at this moment I can’t remember what else I’ve seen Garbo in. Something in the desert or was that Marlene Dietrich? Hmmm. Gonna have to get you guys to remind me why I love her so much. Stay tuned for an upcoming post on an actress I don’t love so much.
